Fasting/Festival of the Day: Buddha Purnima

According to the Hindu Panchang, the full moon of the month of Vaishakha is celebrated as Buddha Purnima. This year, this sacred date falls on May 12. It is believed that on this very day Lord Buddha was born, who is also considered the ninth incarnation of Lord Vishnu. It is also believed that on this auspicious date, Lord Buddha attained enlightenment in Bodh Gaya and later on this very day, he also attained Mahaparinirvana (this term in Buddhism refers to the state after death).

Because of this, the day is a symbol of great reverence and devotion for Buddhist followers. A special point is that this festival is celebrated not only by the followers of Buddhism but also with great devotion by people of the Sanatan tradition. This day inspires us to walk on the path of truth, compassion, and self-realization.

    Buddha Purnima Puja Vidhi –
Begin this day by waking up during Brahma Muhurta. After bathing and meditation, wear clean clothes and first offer water to the Sun God. After this, perform a proper worship of Lord Vishnu. Offer him yellow flowers, yellow fruits, and Tulsi.
On this day, definitely recite the Purnima Vrat Katha (story of the full moon fast). Observe a fast throughout the day and break the fast after sighting the Moon in the evening. Also worship the Peepal tree, because it is the very place where Lord Buddha attained self-realization.
