Late businessman Sunjay Kapur, who passed away on June 12 following a heart attack during a polo match in England, left behind not only a legacy in business and sports but also a complex, blended family. In a past interview that has resurfaced after his death, his third wife, Priya Sachdev, opened up about their unique family dynamics, her relationship with Sunjay’s children from his previous marriage with Karisma Kapoor, and how their son Azarias became the thread that brought everyone together.

From Separate Lives to Shared Home

Priya first met Sunjay Kapur during one of his frequent trips from Delhi to Mumbai, where his children Samaira and Kiaan lived with Karisma. What began as a casual encounter on a flight turned into a friendship that grew deeper after his divorce. Eventually, they got married and started a life together.

Shortly after their marriage, Priya’s daughter from her previous relationship with Vikram Chatwal, Safira, moved in with them. The initial days of blending two households were not without difficulties. Priya remembered that Sunjay had certain expectations and house rules, but she encouraged him to form a direct relationship with Safira. Over time, that effort paid off, and the two developed a strong bond.

Azarias: The Bond That United the Family

Priya shared that their household eventually became a home for four children — Sunjay and Karisma’s children Samaira and Kiaan, Priya’s daughter Safira, and their son together, Azarias. She described Azarias as the connector, someone who naturally linked both sides of the family.

According to her, Azarias helped foster unity because he was both Karisma and Sunjay’s children’s half-brother, and Safira’s half-sibling. This made him a bridge across family lines. The closeness between Samaira and Safira also grew, forming another layer of connection that helped the family come together.

Finding Her Place as a Stepmother

While Priya emphasized that she never tried to take on the role of mother to Samaira and Kiaan, she said she has found a meaningful space in their lives. Their bond, she noted, is built on shared moments and open conversations — ranging from casual chatter to deeper discussions.

She acknowledged that their family wasn’t formed in the usual way, but over time, it has become a loving and supportive unit. “We all have grown to love and appreciate each other,” she had said.

    Life Between Continents

Sunjay Kapur’s deep love for polo also shaped their lifestyle. Every year, the family would relocate to England during the polo season, where he played professionally. It worked out logistically as well — Safira’s boarding school was close by, and their young son attended different schools in India and the UK.

Despite the back-and-forth between countries, Priya said the family always returned to India together, as their core life and business remained based there.

Through the ups and downs of combining children from different marriages, Priya Sachdev described their journey not as a perfect story, but one of patience, emotional investment, and growth. In the end, it was their youngest child, Azarias, who unknowingly became the heart of their modern, blended family — a quiet symbol of unity born from two pasts.
