'I haven't seen camels': Trump surprised during his lavish visit to Qatar, appreciates Qatar's Emir gesture

US President Donald Trump and his motorcade were greeted by dozens of mounted camels after his plane landed in Qatar Wednesday morning as he continues his four-day trip to the Middle East. Trump arrived to Doha Wednesday morning, and met with local leaders as well joined a Qatari State Dinner.

The motorcade from Doha airport to the Amiri Diwan—the heart of Qatar's government—included striking red Tesla Cybertrucks, seemingly a nod to Tesla CEO and Trump supporter Elon Musk, along with riders on horseback.

" "As a construction guy.. this is perfect marble. This is what they call perfecto…We appreciate those camels," Trump said Wednesday while meeting with Qatar's Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad al-Thani. "I haven't seen camels like that in a long time. And really, we appreciate it very much."

Trump signs deals with Qatar

President Trump signed a series of agreements with al-Thani as part of the trip, including a purchasing agreement by Qatar for Boeing aircraft, as well as letters of intent and "joint cooperation" between Qatar and the US. Wednesday's deals follow Trump's visit to Saudi Arabia Tuesday, when he signed a "strategic economic partnership" with Saudi Arabia for energy, defense, mining and space-based agreements that amount to $600 billion. Trump said the deal could lead to the creation of two million jobs in the US.

Saudi Arabia also welcomed Trump with grand gestures, including sending fighter jet escorts to welcome Air Force One to the ground and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman greeting Trump on the tarmac. The Saudis also rolled out a mobile version of Trump's beloved fast-food joint, McDonald's, in Riyadh during his trip.

Trump and the Qatar jet

The Qatari royal family plans to give the luxury Boeing 747-8, estimated to be worth $400m (£300m), to the US Department of Defence. The luxurious jet will be used as part of a fleet of planes dubbed Air Force One – the president's official mode of air travel.

The current fleet includes two 747-200 jets which have been in use since 1990, along with several smaller and somewhat secretive 757s.

The White House says that the new plane – which could require years and millions of dollars to refit and upgrade – will be transferred to Trump's presidential library at the end of his term.

Also, Boeing has secured a deal with Qatar for up to 210 jets in what the White House is calling the aircraft maker’s “largest-ever” widebody order, worth $96 billion dollars.

The order comes as the Gulf state’s prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani, dismissed controversy surrounding Trump’s plan to accept a Boeing 747-8 to be used, at least initially, as Air Force One.
