MAGA without Donald Trump? 2028 belongs to the GOP, but Trump has a replacement

    Synopsis

JD Vance is leading the race for the Republican nomination in 2028. A recent poll shows him ahead of Ron DeSantis and others. Donald Trump praised Vance and Marco Rubio as potential successors. Kamala Harris is the frontrunner for the Democrats. Vance, once critical of Trump, is now a key ally.

    The New Face of MAGA?
Vice President JD Vance emerges as the GOP’s 2028 frontrunner, as Republicans look beyond Trump
America is already building a new political consensus for 2028, and a new chapter of the conservative movement is taking shape, but with a new face at the helm, claims a recent poll survey.

Vice President JD Vance has emerged as the clear frontrunner for the Republican nomination, according to a recent J.L. Partners poll for the 2028 US presidential race. The survey was conducted on May 13-14, 2025, and among 975 registered Republican voters, it reveals that 46 per cent support Vance, placing him well ahead of other potential candidates.

Trump said in March that the future of MAGA looked “so strong,” with Rubio and Vance appearing to be the early favorites to get the president’s backing come primary season. “You look at Marco, you look at JD Vance, who’s fantastic,” he told NBC News. “You look at, I could name 10, 15, 20 people right now just sitting here. No, I think we have a tremendous party.”

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis trails with 8 percent support, followed by Ohio gubernatorial candidate Vivek Ramaswamy at 7 percent. Senators Marco Rubio and Ted Cruz each garnered 6 percent, while former South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley received 5 percent.

Vance's ascent is notable, considering his initial criticism of Donald Trump during the 2016 campaign, when he referred to Trump as "America's Hitler." However, Vance has since become a staunch ally of the former president, aligning closely with Trump's policies and rhetoric. His loyalty was rewarded when Trump selected him as his running mate in the 2024 election.

Vance has been an active figure in the administration as the Vice President, particularly on issues related to immigration and law enforcement. He recently criticized leaders of sanctuary cities for undermining law enforcement and pledged federal defunding for jurisdictions that do not cooperate with immigration enforcement.

Vance's appeal extends beyond traditional Republican strongholds. He has cultivated relationships with Silicon Valley figures, attending fundraisers hosted by venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya, reflecting his outreach to tech industry donors.

On the Democratic side, former Vice President Kamala Harris leads with 30 percent support, followed by former Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg at 8 percent, and Governors Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania and Gavin Newsom of California at 7 percent each.

The poll did not include Donald Trump, who, at 78, will be constitutionally ineligible to run for a third term in 2028. However, Trump has hinted at seeking a third term, raising questions about the future direction of the Republican Party.

Vance's rise from a venture capitalist and author of the memoir "Hillbilly Elegy" to Vice President and leading presidential contender underscores his rapid ascent in American politics.

His strong showing in early polls suggests he is well-positioned to carry forward the MAGA movement's legacy into the next election cycle.
