Oscar Santis scored the all-important winning goal in the 32nd minute as Guatemala edged Jamaica 1-0 in their Group C opener at the CONCACAF Gold Cup on Monday in Carson, California.
The goal came after Darwin Lom, with his back to the net, redirected a deflected long ball with a clever backheel. Santis latched onto it in space and fired past a diving Andre Blake from close range.
Despite holding 54.3% of possession and outshooting Guatemala 15-11, Jamaica managed only two shots on target. Blake recorded three saves, while Guatemala 'keeper Nicholas Hagen made two.
Panama also won their opener, defeating Guadeloupe 5-2. Guatemala and Panama, both with three points, will meet Friday in Austin, while Jamaica faces Guadeloupe.
