Trump freezes Nobel-winning scientist’s U.S. grant, China jumps in with open arms and unlimited funding offers

    Synopsis

Nobel laureate Ardem Patapoutian, who found refuge in America, faced a dilemma when NIH funding cuts threatened his research. China offered him guaranteed funding to relocate his lab. Despite the tempting offer, Patapoutian declined, driven by loyalty to his adopted home. He cautioned that emerging scientists might be compelled to leave.

Ardem Patapoutian fled from his war-struck Lebanon and sought a new beginning in America in 1986. Decades later, the country that gave him safety and opportunity helped him achieve science’s highest honour, the Nobel Prize for his discoveries of receptors for temperature and touch in 2021, as per a report. But today, the same nation is forcing him to confront an impossible choice: stay loyal to his adopted home, or take his life’s work elsewhere.

    Scientific Progress Faces Political Setback

In February, the Trump administration slashed over $1.5 billion from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the backbone of American biomedical research, as per Latin Times. Among the affected institutions was where he worked, Scripps Research Institute in California, which was left scrambling with a $38 million shortfall, according to the report. The cuts also froze the federal grant funding Dr Patapoutian relied on to continue his groundbreaking research, as per the report.

    A Tempting Offer from China

Within hours of publicly voicing concern about the budget crisis on the social media platform Bluesky, Patapoutian’s email inbox lit up with an unexpected offer, as per Latin Times. The email was from China offering him to relocate his lab to "any city, any university I want," with guaranteed funding for 20 years, reported Latin Times.

The Future of American Science at Risk

However, Patapoutian, who is a molecular biologist and neuroscientist, declined the offer that was given to him by China because of his love for his adopted country, according to the report. But, he warned that emerging scientists may have no choice but to leave and relocate, which puts the future of US scientific breakthroughs and research at risk, reported Latin Times.
