Neighbours of Sonam Raghuvanshi in Indore are in disbelief after her name surfaced in the murder investigation of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi.

“I can't believe it, she was a well-behaved and educated girl. I don't know if she did it or not,” one neighbour said.

“The girl may be involved, but we can't claim anything. She was a nice, simple girl. We don't think she would have done it.”

Raja-Sonam Raghuvanshi Case: The honeymoon that turned tragic

Sonam and Raja, both from Madhya Pradesh’s Indore, had gone to Meghalaya for their honeymoon. But days later, Raja’s body was found there on June 2. Sonam was later found near a dhaba in Uttar Pradesh’s Ghazipur and is now in police custody.

According to Meghalaya Police, three men from Madhya Pradesh have been arrested in the case. They also said Sonam had surrendered. Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma posted on X (formerly Twitter) that the police made a breakthrough within seven days and one more accused is still on the run.

    What Sonam’s family says

Sonam Raghuvanshi's father, Devi Singh, believes his daughter is innocent and claims the Meghalaya Police and government are lying. “My daughter called her brother from a dhaba in Ghazipur. Then the police came and took her to a hospital. She cannot do this. I have faith in her,” he said. “The government is making up stories. I haven’t even been able to speak to my daughter yet.”

    Raja’s brother wants CBI probe

Raja’s brother, Vipul Raghuvanshi, has demanded a CBI investigation. He says they were not informed by the police and were ignored when they tried to contact the officials in Shillong.

“I spoke to someone around 2 AM who told me Sonam was found. But she didn’t surrender. She was taken in by police. We don’t believe she’s guilty unless she confesses,” he said. “Raja and Sonam seemed happy together. We never saw them fight.”

Vipul added that Meghalaya Police still haven’t given them the post-mortem report and that he wants the Madhya Pradesh Police or the CBI to take over the case.
