Uttarakhand is reeling from the fallout of a rape incident in Nainital that has triggered communal tensions, property damage, and a legal tussle.
The incident occurred on Wednesday when a 12-year-old girl was allegedly raped by a 75-year-old man identified as Osman. His role sparked angry protests, particularly targeting establishments belonging to the minority community. By Thursday, the situation had escalated, with violent mobs destroying property and the city virtually coming to a halt.
On Friday, the Uttarakhand High Court took suo motu cognizance, directing the state government to ensure law and order and staying the demolition of the accused's house - a move the administration had initiated.
The unrest has come just as the tourist season begins in the hill state, leading to cancellation of bookings and economic concerns. Police have stepped up deployment in sensitive areas.
Uttarakhand DGP Deepam Seth said the situation was now under control, warning of strict action against those spreading misinformation. He assured that security for Char Dham Yatra pilgrims and tourists was a top priority, as the state looks to prevent further escalation.
