Trump Tariff Highlights News Updates: Trump says he's lifting tariffs on most goods from Mexico for 4 weeks amid economic fears from trade war

Trump Tariff Highlights News Updates: US President Donald Trump on Thursday said Mexico won't be required to pay tariffs on any goods that fall under the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade until April 2, but made no mention of a reprieve for Canada despite his Commerce secretary saying a comparable exemption was likely.

"After speaking with President Claudia Sheinbaum of Mexico, I have agreed that Mexico will not be required to pay Tariffs on anything that falls under the USMCA Agreement," Trump wrote on Truth Social. "This Agreement is until April 2nd."

Earlier on Thursday, US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick said the one-month reprieve on hefty tariffs on goods imported from Mexico and Canada that has been granted to automotive products is likely to be extended to all products that comply with the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement on trade.

Lutnick told CNBC he expected Trump to announce that extension on Thursday, a day after exempting automotive goods from the 25% tariffs he slapped on imports from Canada and Mexico earlier in the week.

Trump "is going to decide this today," Lutnick said, adding "it's likely that it will cover all USMCA-compliant goods and services."

"So if you think about it this way, if you lived under Donald Trump's US-Mexico-Canada agreement, you will get a reprieve from these tariffs now. If you chose to go outside of that, you did so at your own risk, and today is when that reckoning comes," he said.

Nonetheless, Trump's social media post made no mention of a reprieve for Canada, the other party to the USMCA deal that Trump negotiated during his first term as president.

    Auto tariffs

Trump’s announcement to impose 25% tariff on auto components from India would reduce the competitiveness of these products in the US market: CRISIL
    05:05:14 PM IST, 06 Mar 2025

    Tariff impact

US President Donald Trump’s reciprocal tariffs can affect exports, which account for ~22% of India’s GDP, adding to the pain from moderating global trade growth and heightened trade uncertainties. - Crisil
    05:05:27 PM IST, 06 Mar 2025

    Domestic growth

Given the tariff war initiated by the US, and the subdued global growth environment, India’s goods exports are expected to face further headwinds in fiscal 2026. However, due to relatively strong on-year domestic growth and a supply glut in international markets, due to US tariff hikes, goods imports are likely to stay high. Together, this suggests pressure on the merchandise trade deficit. - Crisil
    03:05:56 PM IST, 06 Mar 2025

    Trade risks

Risks to trade have increased due to the tariff war set off by the US. Thus, changes in the US tariff policy and, subsequently, retaliatory tariffs bear watching. India is
vulnerable to US tariff actions as it runs a trade surplus with the country and taxes imports from there at a higher weighted average tariff rate (9.5%) than Washington’s taxes on imports from India (3%). - Crisil

Trump reaches 36.6 million television viewers for first address to Congress in second term

President Donald Trump reached an estimated 36.6 million television viewers for his address to Congress on Tuesday night, the Nielsen company said.
That beat the 32.2 million people who watched former President Joe Biden's final State of the Union address last year, but was smaller than any of Trump's audiences for the annual address during his first term, Nielsen said.

Trump's first speech to Congress as president, in 2017, was seen by 47.7 million people. Television viewing in general has decreased since then. Nielsen measured viewing on 15 different television networks, including those whose feed was carried on streaming services.

Ireland will not take part in Ukraine 'deterrent' force, says PM

Irish troops will not be sent to Ukraine to participate in a "deterrent force", Prime Minister Micheal Martin said Wednesday, but he remained open to involvement in a peacekeeping contingent.

"If a ceasefire develops, or if there's a cessation of hostilities, Ireland has always been open to peacekeeping, but we wouldn’t be part of a deterrent force," Martin told reporters at an Irish-British summit in Liverpool.

"They are two different and distinct issues," he insisted.

France and the United Kingdom have said they are ready to deploy troops to Ukraine to ensure that a possible ceasefire is preserved, with American support.

DBS CEO Gupta's pay rises in 2024 after strong earnings

DBS Group Chief Executive Officer Piyush Gupta took home a total of S$17.6 million ($13.22 million) for 2024, after the banking giant reported a surge in profit margins and unveiled a dividend capital return plan last month.

Gupta had taken a significant pay cut in 2023 to take accountability for certain digital banking disruptions that had happened at DBS.

Gupta's 2024 remuneration was 14.3% higher than the S$15.4 million he pocketed in 2022, according to the company's annual report released on Thursday. He received a salary of S$11.2 million in 2023.

DBS's shares soared to a record high on February 10 after Singapore's largest bank flagged an improvement in net interest income for 2025 and a dividend capital return plan, as a jump in its fourth-quarter profit met expectations.

Peace, tranquility in border areas essential for relationship to grow: EAM Jaishankar on China

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said that New Delhi wants a stable relationship with China in which India's interests are "respected and sensitivities are recognised."

"The key issue is how to create a stable equilibrium and transition into the next phase of equilibriums. We want a stable relationship where our interests are respected, our sensitivities are recognized, and where it works for both of us. That is really the main challenge in our relationship," Jaishankar said on the India-China relationship.

He noted that over the past 40 years, the assumption has been that peace and tranquillity in the border areas are essential for the relationship to grow. "If the border is unstable, not peaceful, or not tranquil, it will inevitably affect the growth and direction of our relationship."

The EAM said this during a conversation on Wednesday at Chatham House, an independent policy institute in London. According to its website, Chatham House has been a source of dialogue and influential ideas for one hundred years.

Panama president calls Trump's talk of 'reclaiming' the Panama Canal a lie

Panama President José Raúl Mulino on Wednesday accused U.S. President Donald Trump of lying when he said in his address to Congress that his administration was “reclaiming” the Panama Canal.

Trump was referencing a deal announced Tuesday for a consortium led by the U.S. investment management company BlackRock Inc. to buy a controlling stake in the company held by a Chinese group that operates ports at both ends of the Panama Canal.

Panama maintains that it has full control over the canal and that the Hong Kong-based group's operation of the ports did not amount to Chinese control over the waterway, and that therefore the sale to a U.S.-based company would not represent any U.S. “reclaiming” of the canal. Panama's government on Tuesday called the sale a private transaction.

Mulino in a message posted to X on Wednesday, rejected that the deal came about because of U.S. pressure. “I reject in the name of Panama and all Panamanians this new affront to the truth and our dignity as a nation,” he wrote. He accused Trump of “lying again.”

Elon Musk comes to Capitol Hill to meet with Republicans who discuss turning DOGE cuts into law

Billionaire Elon Musk arrived on Capitol Hill Tuesday and learned about something new — budget rescissions, an obscure legislative tool that could bring legal heft to his federal budget slashing effort and enshrine the cuts into law.

Musk joined a lunch meeting with Republican senators just hours after the Supreme Court issued a setback to the Trump administration's efforts to freeze some $2 billion in foreign aid funds as part of its sweeping shutdown of the U.S. Agency for International Development. As he opened the private session, Musk led with a message urging Congress to act.

Over plates of fried catfish, senators explained how the White House could put the billions of dollars of savings he has amassed into what’s called a budget rescissions package, and send it to Congress for a vote to rescind the funding. Musk seemed thrilled, they said.

"SpaceX is working with L3Harris and the FAA to identify instances where Starlink could serve as a long-term infrastructure upgrade for aviation safety."

The FAA said on Wednesday that upgrading the aging U.S. air traffic control system will require multiple technologies and companies as it tests Starlink systems at several agency sites.

Trump accuses Trudeau of using tariff talks for political gain, questions Canada’s election timeline

US President Donald J. Trump posts, "Justin Trudeau, of Canada, called me to ask what could be done about Tariffs. I told him that many people have died from Fentanyl that came through the Borders of Canada and Mexico, and nothing has convinced me that it has stopped. He said that it’s gotten better, but I said, “That’s not good enough.” The call ended in a “somewhat” friendly manner! He was unable to tell me when the Canadian Election is taking place, which made me curious, like, what’s going on here? I then realized he is trying to use this issue to stay in power. Good luck Justin!"

US plans to fire 80,000 Veterans Affairs workers as part of Trump cuts, sparking backlash

The Department of Veterans Affairs is planning to cut more than 80,000 workers from the agency, according to an internal memo seen by Reuters, drawing condemnation from military veteran groups and Democrats.

The VA's chief of staff, Christopher Syrek, sent a memo to senior agency officials on Tuesday, telling them the goal was to return the agency to 2019 staffing levels of just under 400,000. That would mean cutting about 82,000 staff.

The memo directed agency staff to work with tech billionaire Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency to make the cuts. It stated that two goals were to "eliminate waste" and "increase workforce efficiency".

"President has been very tough on China": US Press Secy Leavitt says on tariffs

The White House said that US President Donald Trump has been very tough on China when it came towards the imposition of tariffs on the country.

The remarks by the White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt on Wednesday came after Trump doubled the tariff on all Chinese imports to 20 per cent from 10 per cent.

"The President has been very tough on China, not just now with 20 per cent and more with the reciprocal tariffs that will hit on April 2nd, but look at what he did in his first term. There were billions of dollars' worth of tariffs that he implemented on China, and it's quite telling that the previous administration did not rescind those tariffs because they realised the value that they had in not only deterring China, but also raising revenue here in the United States," she said.

Leavitt reiterated the stand of Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth, who said that the country will always remain prepared to defend itself, as a reponse to the statement by China where it said it is ready to fight "any" type of war, be it tariff or trade.
